Stereotype formation as trait aggregation

چکیده
We propose an aggregation model which explains stereotype formation under the attribution hypothesis. We show, under very mild axioms, that an observer can be thought of perceiving a group in terms her subjective opinion about the representativeness of subgroups as well as a possible prejudice she might have. This paper is part of a project entitled Social Perception A Social Choice Perspective, supported by Istanbul Bilgi University Research Fund. It has been completed while Remzi Sanver was visiting Ecole Polytechnique, Paris. We are grateful to both institutions. We owe our initiation to the related social psychology literature to Joachim I. Krueger and hope that the outcome is worthy of his valuable guidance. Michael Birnbaum, Zoltan Csigas, Todd Davies, Robin Dawes, Rosemary Gosling, Kutsi Nircan, Paul Price, Michel Regenwetter and Ramon Shaban made stimulating comments on relating our theoretical ndings to the relevant literature. The paper bene ted a lot from comments made by Goksel Asan, Murat Ali Cengelci, Bora Erdamar, Kevin Hasker, Jean-Jacques Herrings, Doruk Iris, Emin Karagozoglu, Murat Kayi, Bettina Klaus, Semih Koray, Ugur Ozdemir, Ipek Ozkal-Sanver, Selcuk Ozyurt, Andres Perea, Hans Peters, Ozer Selcuk, Taner Yigit. Origins of the stuttering stereotype : Stereotype formation through inference - revisited Sean
The stereotype of people who stutter is predominantly negative, holding that stutterers are excessively nervous, anxious, and reserved. The anchoring–adjustment hypothesis suggests that the stereotype of stuttering arises from a process of first anchoring the stereotype in personal feelings during times of normal speech disfluency, and then adjusting based on a rapid heuristic judgment. The cur...

متن کاملAutomaticity of social behavior: direct effects of trait construct and stereotype-activation on action.
Previous research has shown that trait concepts and stereotype become active automatically in the presence of relevant behavior or stereotyped-group features. Through the use of the same priming procedures as in previous impression formation research, Experiment 1 showed that participants whose concept of rudeness was printed interrupted the experimenter more quickly and frequently than did par...
متن کاملWhen stereotypes get in the way: stereotypes obstruct stereotype-inconsistent trait inferences.
There is a growing body of evidence indicating that people spontaneously make trait inferences while observing the behavior of others. The present article reports a series of 5 experiments that examined the influence of stereotypes on the spontaneous inference of traits. Results consistently showed weaker spontaneous trait inferences for stereotype-inconsistent behavioral information than for s...
متن کاملGender stereotype endorsement differentially predicts girls' and boys' trait-state discrepancy in math anxiety
Mathematics is associated with anxiety for many students; an emotion linked to lower well-being and poorer learning outcomes. While findings typically show females to report higher trait math anxiety than males, no gender differences have to date been found in state (i.e., momentary) math anxiety. The present diary study aimed to replicate previous findings in investigating whether levels of ac...
